When the business runs on you.

Most growing businesses reach a point where decisions queue up for the same two or three people. It limits growth today, and it reduces value later.

The signs

  • Decisions wait until you, or one key person, are available.
  • A new joiner takes months to become productive.
  • Only one person can explain why a number moved.
  • Important rules live in a spreadsheet or in someone's head.

Why it matters now

A business that depends on a few people grows at the pace of those people. Onboarding slows, quality varies, and every absence becomes a risk.

Why it matters later

The same dependence is what buyers and investors look for first. In a July 2026 survey, 30% of buyers said they would pay more for a strong management team willing to stay, and 26% of sellers said strengthening management had the biggest positive effect on their sale.1

A business that runs without its owner is easier to grow, and easier to sell.

Three first steps

  1. Map where decisions sit. List the decisions that wait for you, and which could be delegated with clear rules.
  2. Write down the five processes that matter most. Start with those that touch customers and cash.
  3. Make the numbers reconcile. Choose a handful of KPIs and make sure anyone can trace them to source.
